Kumbhalgarh Fort: History & Highlights

Kumbhalgarh is one of Rajasthan’s most remarkable forts, tucked away in the Aravalli hills about 84 km from Udaipur. Built by Rana Kumbha in the 15th century, the fort took nearly 15 years to complete and stands as a proud symbol of Mewar’s history and strength. What makes Kumbhalgarh truly special is its massive 36-kilometre wall, often called the “Great Wall of India,” which is considered the second longest continuous wall in the world after the Great Wall of China. The wall is so wide in places that eight horses could once ride across it side by side, giving you a sense of just how massive this fortification really is.

Kumbhalgarh is a really important place in Rajasthan’s history – it’s where the famous warrior king, Maharana Pratap, was born. This fort was thought to be impossible to capture, and it withstood many attacks over the years. Inside the fort, there are over 360 temples, which is a mix of Hindu and Jain shrines, as well as palaces and water tanks that show how the city was self-sufficient. The fort’s strong walls and impressive architecture make it a significant historical site. In fact, in 2013, UNESCO recognized Kumbhalgarh as a World Heritage Site, as part of the “Hill Forts of Rajasthan” group, which highlights its importance in terms of architecture and history. The recognition by UNESCO has further boosted the fort’s reputation as a must-visit destination in Rajasthan.

Walking through Kumbhalgarh today, you get to experience its winding walls, ancient temples and views of the Aravalli hills that stretch out for miles. It’s a place where history feels alive, making it a must-visit for anyone travelling from Udaipur.
